Maximising the Sales Function
Mark Humphries is Chair at Bluprintx, a global digital transformation services provider focused on delivering technology and data solutions in marketing, sales and service.
In our recent interview, Mark talks about refining the sales strategy to drive commercial performance, key lessons learnt from building a high-performing sales operation, and highlights from his career.
Bluprintx has experienced significant growth since you became Chairman in 2024. How would you describe the evolution of its sales journey?
Bluprintx is the ninth private equity-backed business I’ve chaired, and in every one of those businesses, I’ve found that great founders are always great salespeople. You don’t scale a company without being able to sell, not just a product, but a vision.
That said, selling at scale is a very different proposition. Founder-led sales can take you a long way, but to build a high-performing, repeatable, and scalable sales engine, you need structure. That means strong people, a clear sales model, a robust playbook, and proven methodologies. You also need momentum, powered by meaningful data, deep insights, and a single source of truth. For us, that’s our CRM system. But it’s not just about having a CRM; it’s about using it properly. When set up well, it doesn’t just track performance, it shows you where to improve next.
Ultimately, sales is a journey with no final destination. You’re always learning, constantly refining. Palatine’s investment has been critical in helping us move from founder-led to a more strategic, sales-led operation. Their approach has made a tangible difference.
With Palatine as a strategic partner, how have you and the leadership team refined the sales strategy to drive commercial performance and scale effectively?
Palatine has a strong reputation for driving sales transformation, and what truly sets them apart is their consistent ability to deliver on that promise.
They bring a clear sales playbook to the table, backed by strong governance and a wealth of learned experience. One of the most valuable aspects has been access to their operational performance reviews (OPRs) and their sales performance dashboards. These tools enable us to monitor the right metrics, challenge ourselves constructively, and embed a culture of continuous improvement. That level of rigour has been invaluable in refining our strategy and scaling in a disciplined, effective way.
What key lessons have emerged about building a high-performing sales operation, and how are these lessons shaping the next phase of growth?
Several important lessons stand out. First and foremost is the quality of data. Without clean, disciplined data entry into your CRM system, you’re building on sand. People often dislike inputting data, but it’s critical, because the CRM must be your single source of truth. If it isn’t, you lose visibility and the ability to improve.
Second, authenticity in sales is absolutely essential. We all know that “people buy from people,” so it’s vital that your team can build genuine relationships. Too often, hiring decisions are based on past performance or impressive CVs, but what really matters is how someone shows up when things aren’t going to plan. It’s about resilience, empathy, and values, not just background.
Third, clarity around what good looks like in a sales role is essential. You’re only as strong as your weakest link, so defining the skills, behaviors, and mindset you want from your team is key. It helps create a culture of excellence.
Finally, we’re embracing the opportunity AI presents to the sales process. AI won’t replace salespeople, but it can amplify their productivity, sharpen their focus, and save time. Whether it’s automating admin, surfacing better insights ahead of meetings, or helping with planning, AI is becoming a strategic advantage, and we’re leaning into it.
Palatine’s investment came at a pivotal stage for the business. How has their backing helped unlock new sales opportunities and accelerate your go-to-market plans?
Palatine’s support has enabled us to front-load many of the essential elements needed for sales success. Too often, sales transformation is left until year three or four of an investment cycle, but by then, it’s usually too late. Palatine came in with a clear focus and started driving improvements from day one.
That early intensity has helped us build robust lead-generation engines, create high-impact sales playbooks, and bring in top-tier commercial talent. Perhaps most importantly, their involvement has given our management team the confidence to invest earlier and with more ambition. They’ve shared insights and best practices gathered from across their portfolio, expertise that many CEOs simply wouldn’t otherwise have access to.
Drawing from your broader experience, what’s been the most rewarding sales-related challenge in your career, and how does it inform the journey you’re now on with Bluprintx?
There are three that stand out. First, helping portfolio companies establish a single source of truth and build a self-sustaining sales operating model. Without this, growth stalls quickly. That’s why so much of my focus is on building a clean, functioning CRM, aligned sales processes, and the right structures to support high performance.
Second, I’ve always enjoyed working with people who don’t naturally see themselves as salespeople. Giving them the confidence and support to succeed in commercial roles, even if they’re outside the sales department, is incredibly rewarding. Often, those individuals go on to close some of the most important deals, precisely because they’re authentic and trusted.
Third, the challenge and the opportunity to deploy AI in sales has been energising. The goal is to enhance performance without losing the human element that makes great sales work. If we can use AI to reduce admin, and free up our people to focus on relationships and strategy, then we’ll be in a very strong position.
