Supporting Access to Education for All

18-08-2022

A university education aids social mobility, increases employability and increases lifetime earnings. We believe access to a university education should be available to all, regardless of background or identity; this is why we chose to become a Manchester Access Programme (MAP) Scholarship donor.

‘I finished the first year of my degree, having achieved a first-class grade. I am so proud of this achievement. Thanks to your help with the scholarship, this was achievable.’ Mohammad Kasib, BSc (Hons) Optometry

MAP is a skills-based programme designed as a pathway for young, talented people from backgrounds currently underrepresented in higher education to attend University. Through the programme, we have supported three students to obtain a Manchester University scholarship that provides life-changing educational opportunities.

‘MAP offered many useful opportunities such as work experience and simulation days in fields many students wanted to go into, which I thought was amazing. It is so hard for young college students in our area to arrange their own work experience as they often get overlooked and lost in the system.’ Mehak Shahid BSc (Hons) Economics

The donor-funded scholarships play a vital role in the student’s success. This funding gives them the freedom to access all the University has to offer. It also helps improve the student experience by relieving the financial pressures that often prevent students from pursuing a university degree.

‘I was able to buy a couple of really expensive textbooks; they have made it much easier for me to revise for my exams. I bought a laptop I’m now using to do all my work and notes from lectures and seminars. I’ve also used the scholarship to contribute to my driving lessons which will be helpful to get around when I’m volunteering and working on placements. Thank you for being my donor; it made a massive difference.’
